Turf protector tarps are used during batting practice to protect turf that is often damaged by players cleats as well as repeated ball strikes. This style of infield spot cover has a trapezoid shape covers from the 1st base line to the 3rd base line. Trapezoid turf protectors are often used in conjunction with our cage collar tarps and the three sizes shown match to provide equal coverage.
These three sizes are designed for use around a standard 26' home plate. Regardless of the size selected the tarp will start 13' from home plate which is 9'2" ahead of home plate. The small size extends out an extra 15'7" and covers 35' up the base line, the medium size provides 19'1" of coverage an spans 40' up the base line, and the large cover is 22'8" deep extending halfway up the base line (aka 45').
Our preferred fabric for baseball batting practice covers is a 9-ounce vinyl coated polyester mesh. The 12x12 construction provides excellent tear strength that outperforms many fabrics double its weight. It features an 80% shade rating which allows water and air to flow through so the tarps can be left in place for hours without disrupting turf growth.
The outer perimeter of each tarp is folded over creating a 2-ply hem. Brass #2 locking spur grommets are machine punched about every 36" around this hem. Typically stakes or spikes are used to secure the tarps but our 40 LBS sandbags do an excellent job without having to poke holes in ground. If selecting this option, we recommend using one bag for about every 5' of edge. Using the small size as an example, there will be about 112' of edge and therefor 22 sandbags are needed.
In addition to these three sizes we can custom build infield turf protectors to any size needed. To quote a custom size we will need to know three measurements. 1) is the diameter of home plate, 2) is how far down the foul line from home plate the tarp should cover, and 3) is how wide the coverage behind home plate needs to be.
