What is a hopper bottom tarp?

Side roll tarps are commonly found on hopper bottom trailers designed for hauling grain, seed, meal, or fertilizer. Hopper bottom trailers feature an open top for easy loading plus a belly dump feature for quick unloading. Hopper bottom roll tarps use a pair of tubes to open the tarp from side to side.

What tarp Width do I need?

96” wide trailers with standard height bows will use a 123” wide tarp. 10’3” provides enough tarp to travel over the bow, down past the latch plate, completely unwind, and reverse roll into the underside of the latch plate.

Trailers with oversized bows will require extra width. If the existing tarp has performed well you can unroll it to the fully extended position and measure across.

With the pipes inserted the tarp will measure about three inches skinnier than it actually is.

What tarp Length do I need?

DO NOT order a 40’ tarp to fit a 40’ trailer. Most likely your trailer features metal end caps at the front and rear. These caps have filled in the first and last couple feet of length. STOP right now, grab a tape measure, walk out to the trailer, and measure the existing tarp’s length. This ten minute investment will save you return shipping costs plus a week of downtime.

If the existing tarp has worn prematurely across the front and or the rear chances are that is a length issue. Now while ordering this new tarp is the time to correct that.

18oz Fabric vs 22oz Fabric

18oz vinyl coated polyester is the industry standard fabric for hopper bottom roll tarps. Lookout Mountain Tarp sourced a higher grade of 18 ounce that features 300 more yarns per square yard, a better UV treatment, and more flex.

We also offer 22oz vinyl fabric which boosts tear strength and abrasion resistance by 50%. Sitting out in the sun both fabrics share the exact same life expectancy so unless you haul highly abrasive materials this thicker fabric provides no advantage. 22oz costs 40% more so in comparison 18oz is buy two get one free. For tarp systems with a manual hand crank the 22oz fabric is more difficult to roll especially in the winter. For electric tarp systems 22oz can result in premature motor failure.

Bottom line is on a standard hopper bottom trailer hauling normal hopper bottom loads the cons of 22oz out way the pros. Having said that we sell nearly twice as many 22oz roll tarps so for many drivers the possibility of having to swap the tarp out sooner must out way the elevated expense.

All hopper bottom tarps are custom made to match the order specs. Fulfillment within one week is always our goal but we now offer a Quick Ship option. An extra $25 will leapfrog your tarp into tomorrow’s production schedule. Please note we are closed Saturday and Sunday so rush orders received on Friday will ship Monday.

How do you ship?

Hopper bottom trailer tarps are folded and rolled up small enough they can ship in a standard box using UPS Ground. UPS Ground takes 1-5 business days depending on how close you are to Cullman, Alabama. UPS offers Saturday delivery in some markets but for the most part Saturday and Sunday are not counted in that calculation. For orders of 10+ tarps please contact us before ordering so we can get a quote for LTL delivery which will likely be more cost effective.
